Public Health Update – February 27, 2025
At this time, there are no confirmed cases of measles in Scurry County. However, there is an active outbreak in nearby regions, and this situation could change. Measles is a highly contagious virus that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person has left an area. Measles is so contagious that 90 percent of unvaccinated people who are exposed will become infected.
Protect Yourself and Your Community
The MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) vaccine is highly effective at preventing the spread of measles. Two doses provide 97 percent protection against the virus, and a single dose is about 93 percent effective. The vaccine has been proven safe through decades of research and use. Since routine vaccination began, measles cases have dropped by more than 99 percent in the United States. The first dose of the MMR vaccine is recommended at 1 year of age, meaning all children under 1 year old are normally part of the unvaccinated population and are at higher risk of infection.
People are considered immune to measles if they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine, have had a confirmed case of measles in the past, or were born before 1957 when widespread exposure to the virus was common. Those who are unsure of their immunity status should consult a healthcare provider about getting vaccinated or checking their immunity through a blood test.
